There is an appeal to the chaotic co-existence found beneath the arcade. Street vendors in front of retail stores attracting passersby with food aromas, restaurants with kitchens protruding into the arcade, woodshop machinery buzzing as pedestrians walk through, and fish processing shops taking over public space at twilight all make the arcade full of energy. It is this vibrance and vigor from this common backdrop we wish to capture and reinterpret.
Our arcade on the ground level is open to the public as a shortcut connecting the front alley to the elliptical plaza in the back. Below the arcade’s concrete slab, there are a museum, a coffee shop, a concrete staircase entrance for the exhibition space, and the spiral metal staircase leading to the roof deck. The openness of the arcade museum is derived from arcades of Taipei. The permutation of concrete columns allows for separate entrances to each destination, and the overlapping public spaces provides opportunities for guests to mingle.
