The East Gate plaza utilizes underpasses, from the ancient moat of the Bamboo City, to create a pedestrian-friendly pathway into the sunken East Gate plaza. In 2020, through the process of reduction, the relationship between pedestrians and the city was further clarified to create a flexible and open urban space. The plaza’s dual roles within the urban space system and the drainage system was also fully embraced in the new iteration. It now serves both as a city-scale space for festivities and as a water retaining basin to alleviate stress from the city’s drainage system.
